Even though there had been no official announcement by his new team, Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo rolled up his sleeves for his first day on the job Monday when Senior Bowl activities got under way in Mobile, Ala. The 52-year-old Spagnuolo agreed on Jan. 19 to take over for Gregg Williams, who left the Saints after three seasons to join the staff of new St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher last week. Spagnuolo was fired after three years as the Rams head coach on Jan. 2, following a 2-14 season. It didn't take long, however, for Saints coach Sean Payton to zero in on Spagnuolo as a replacement for Williams. As a fan of the New Orleans Saints, watching Super Bowl XLVI was bittersweet. I was happy to see New Orleans native Eli Manning grab his second Super Bowl MVP award by leading the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots.

Drew Brees To nobody's surprise, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was not named the 2011 NFL MVP. That distinction went to Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. Brees finishing second in the 2011 MVP voting is not what has me upset.

Drew Brees' record-setting season has earned the New Orleans quarterback the 2011 Associated Press NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. Brees shattered Dan Marino's 27-year-old mark by passing for 5,476 yards, and his 468 completions broke Peyton Manning's 2010 record of 450. Brees finished the season completing 71.6 percent of his passes, breaking his own 2009 NFL record (70.6).
